His research interests are in epidemiology and the economic evaluation of diagnostic and therapeutic clinical decision-making, particularly in neurological and chronic diseases. He is specialized in the development and application of population models built with discrete event simulation (DES) and Markov models to cost-effectiveness and budget impact analyses of health programs, and recently the application DES modeling to epidemiological studies to simulate clinical or epidemiological processes that cannot be observed, as early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. He has applied this approach to thrombolysis for stroke, the use of hyaluronic acid in knee osteoarthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer screening, hepatitis C, obesity, and bariatric surgery.
He has been author or lead author of 65 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and is Member of the Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM), the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SSE), and the Spanish Health Economic Association (AES).
