Biography & Research:
Ahmet Tarık Baykal, Ph.D. studied chemistry at Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey. Completed his MSc. degree at Istanbul Technical University in Chemistry in 2001. Received his Ph.D. degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in 2007. Joined the Center for Advanced Proteomics Research group at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and worked there first as a post-doctoral researcher and later as a research associate until 2009. Established his first proteomics research laboratory at The Technological and Scientific Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and led the research team for 5 years. He was appointed as Assist. Prof. of Biochemistry at Medipol University School of Medicine in 2013 and worked as the principal investigator of the Proteomics Laboratory. Transferred his research group to Acıbadem University School of Medicine in 2015 and currently leading the neurodynamics research group. The proteomics laboratory is involved in the evaluation of molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration. Advanced proteomics tools like label-free differential proteome expression analysis, PTM analysis and targeted proteomics is used to study the genesis and progression of neurological diseases like Alzheimer´s, Parkinson´s and Huntington’s diseases. Both in-vitro (SH-SY5Y) and transgenic mouse models are used to discover new proteins involved in neurodegenerative processes and to discover new alternate drug targets. Furthermore, our team collaborates both nationally and internationally in the field of clinical proteomics studies.
