Biography & Research:
I studied Biology at the University of Valencia with the speciality of Biochemistry. I obtained my PhD in the department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine (University of Valencia) in 2002. My main research line is the role of oxidative stress in Alzheimer’s disease. My group elucidated the importance of mitochondria in generating oxidants by their direct interaction with Alzheimer’s amyloid-beta peptide. In recent years, we have focused on studying molecular changes produced by beta-amyloid toxicity. We propose a mechanism to link Aβ toxicity and tau hyperphosphorylation in AD by the upregulation of RCAN1 gene expression. Now, we are interested in why neurogenesis is impaired in Alzheimer’s, also in the effect of monosodium glutamate intake in the disease and finally, we are finding new plasma biomarkers of Alzheimer’s in a more clinical research line.
