Biography & Research:
Armanda E. Santos has a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1992, Best student Faculty of Pharmacy), a Master in Cell Biology (1995) and a PhD in Pharmacy (2003) by the University of Coimbra (UC). She initiated her academic career as Teaching Assistant (1994) at the Faculty of Pharmacy, UC, and become Assistant Professor in 2003. Currently, she is Associate Professor with tenure at the same university. She is a senior researcher at the Cell Signaling and Metabolism in Disease group from the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology at UC. In recent years her research has been focused on the development of selective ß-secretase inhibitors that may pave the way for a treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. She is also interested in the development of new drugs targeting glutaminyl cyclase and in the identification of new blood biomarkers allowing for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.
