Biography & Research:
Carmen Burtea obtained her PhD in Biological Sciences in 1997 from the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Biology, and in Biomedical Sciences in 2007 from the University of Mons-Hainaut, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy (supervision of Professor Robert N. Muller). Since 2009, she was appointed as Professor at the University of Mons, where she is teaching the Cell Biology, Methods of molecular targeting, Biomedical applications of molecular imaging, and Biology, including the elements of human genetics. Being the leader of the Phage Display Unit of the NMR and Molecular Imaging Laboratory, she is currently supervising the activity of several PhD and Master students in Biomedical sciences. Carmen Burtea is the President of the Belgian F.R.S.-FNRS (Scientific Research Funds) Scientific Council of the Doctoral School in Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and is member of the scientific committee of the Belgian Erasme Fonds for Medical Research. Carmen Burtea is also member of several scientific societies (International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, Federation of European Neuroscience Societies, The European Peptide Society) and is reviewer of several scientific journals. Her research is focused on molecular interaction of peptides with cellular biomolecules, molecular imaging by MRI, targeted delivery of drugs and contrast agents, modulation of signal transduction pathways in cells. These studies have lead to the submission of several patents that treat with the development of functionalized contrast agents for molecular imaging.
