Biography & Research:
Norshariza Nordin is an Associate Professor in the Medical Genetics Unit, Department of Biomedical Science, and a member of the Genetics & Regenerative Medicine (ReGEN) Research Group in the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, UPM. She received her BSc in Biological Sciences (Microbiology) from California State University Sacramento, California, USA, in 1994. Later, she continued her MSc in Medical Microbiology at the University of Malaya, Malaysia, conferred the degree in 2002. In 2006, she obtained her PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Genes and Development), specialising in animal stem cell research, from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Her main research employs mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells and amniotic fluid stem (AFS) cells in exploring stem cell differentiation potential and as models to understand neural development. She is also interested in unravelling neuroprotective, neuroregenerative and neuro-enhancement properties of Centella asiatica using stem cell-derived neurons as a model for neurodegenerative diseases. She is also embarking on stem cell-derived secretomes and exosomes as modalities for stem cell-free or acellular therapy for neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. She is also one of the co-founding editors-in-chief of Neuroscience Research Notes, the Vice President of the Genetics Society of Malaysia (PGM, 2023-2025), an EXCO member of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Society of Malaysia (TESMA, 2023-2025) and an inaugural EXCO member of Malaysian Society for Extracellular Vesicles (MySEV, 2023-2025).
